PROBLEM BEHAVIOURS

We need to identify if your dog has “problem behaviours” or if your dog has more serious “Behaviour problems”. What is the difference? “Problem behaviours” are behaviours that are can be fixed with the help of a good dog trainer. Problems like jumping up, not coming when called,  or ignoring  commands and instruction. “behaviour problems” are problems that are a little more serious, like aggression towards people or dogs, anxiety,  unusual behaviour  or where basic training does not help a problem. It is the duty of your trainer to recognise when there is a more serious problem and recommend the appropriate treatment or resources.

Fear, aggression, anxiety, over arousal or frustration can be a hard to manage for most owners. It is ideal that we work on changing the dogs behaviour under the moments of stress to gain greater control, establish better behaviours and take care of the dogs emotional wellbeing under these stressful moments. Behaviour modification involves working with the dog to change the dogs behaviour in these stressful situations and in the long term change the way they feel about these scenarios in the future. We might help them by giving them alternative behaviours (sit instead of lunge), alternative feelings about being in the situation (happy rather than scared) or give them lifelong alternative reactions to a situation (like walk away instead of want to stay & fight). Good obedience, relationships and communication will help. By using the tools that your dog knows well it will help build new behaviours, ones that are more appropriate, where the dog is relaxed and in control of their actions and reactions.

Feel free to contact me to discuss your concerns and we can find the best path to follow to get successful changes in your dogs behaviour.
